Filth Floor Gallery Presents

“Seeing Stars”

Corrie Gregory January 10, 2015 - February 15, 2015 Opening reception Saturday, January 10, 6-9pm at Fifth Floor

Looking - Chapter 1 (2014) Mixed Media on Book Cover
7x 9.25 Unframed
Fifth Floor Gallery is pleased to announce, Seeing Stars, a new body of drawings and paintings by Los Angeles based artist Corrie Gregory. Creating characters that are evocative of old children's fables, Gregory’s unique eye and technical execution is at times as unsettling as it is familiar. Her process of using technical rendering while leaving herself open to chance allows her to explore this body’s similar subjects over and over, creating a narrative in the subtlety of the differences. The lackadaisical expressions and repetitive motifs begin to feel like the cyclical nature of a recurring dream, always changing and yet somehow the same. Painting on found objects such as vintage medical ephemera or old notebook paper also evokes a strange sense of nostalgia and can’t help but leave the viewer somewhat dazzled or entrapped, as if themselves seeing stars.

Corrie Gregory earned her BFA from Otis College of Art & Design in 1991. Recent exhibitions in Los Angeles include shows at The Nomad Gallery and Flower Pepper Gallery.

A group exhibition of panda inspired works. Curated by Nicole Bruckman

Opening Reception: Sat. June 7th, 2014, 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm
Exhibition: June 7th – June 27th, 2014

For the show I created 5 small mixed media works. This collection was all about drawing and letting my imagination run wild. As I sketched it became apparent that I was creating a family and documenting the the various members.  The thought process was that they needed to be small and intimate. Like keepsakes having there own history and storyline. Please come check them out - You might recognize someone you know ;). Hope you like Panda's.

The sketch for this piece has been in my sketch collection for a few years. (I don't have a sketch book; I have files of drawings and sketches in a big old Harvest Gold file cabinet that has seen way too many moves.)

When I was asked to be included in Of History And Hope, I had initially focused on a Tiger painting. I worked on this Bear for a break from the Tiger. But dang nab'it this bear became my first love.  I could feel this painting getting quiet - making the space more ethereal - less defined.  I'm sure I'll start making noise again and obsessing about those roots branches and trees.

I'll be posting the finished painting Change Of Heart. In the meantime

Also, save the date!  Saturday June 7th, 2014 from 6:30-9:00.  All I can say is "Pandamonium." More info to come.

Write Right and Other Natural Causes
July 27- August 31,2013

July 27, 2013 5-10 pm

Book Show is pleased to present the inaugural exhibition in our space with work by Los Angeles-based artist Corrie Gregory. Write Right and Other Natural Causes includes Gregory’s latest works on paper, as well as larger-format paintings on Dura-lar.

Corrie Gregory’s work lives on the border between dreams and nightmares, where chance and control collide. Her art is born out of investigation. Gregory notes, “I believe in the practice of art. Once I have the technical control, I am able to let go and open the process to the possibility of happenstance.”

Write Right and Other Natural Causes
finds Gregory exploring Jungian themes from the deep preconscious, themes that have appeared in fables around the world for hundreds of years and which continue to resonate today. Her animals take on human characteristics and her humans, children all, exhibit animal parts, drawing a mystical connection between us and our animal nature. The characters in Gregory’s work sprout roots, float in the air, or do both. Her creatures are innocent and perplexed, sly and savvy, or passive and subject to the whims of nature, but never victims of their fate.

Gregory also draws inspiration from mid-twentieth century science and medicine as well as her materials. Vintage doctors’ prescription pads are the canvas for much of her latest work. Her drawings on those aging pieces of paper investigate the tension between our ability to rationally know or control and our deeper instinctive knowledge. The show’s title comes from the wrapper-band for a sheaf of children’s notebook paper some 60 years old.

Book Show is a book store founded by Jen Hitchcock and housed with in the vibrant energized environment of artist/designer Damon Robinson’s NOMAD print studio, gallery and art compound in the up-and-coming Frogtown area of Los Angeles. In addition to Gregory’s work, the opening reception will feature an intimate performance by alt-country singer/songwriter Gina Villalobos.

About 4! years ago we moved in to a sweet "lovable" house in North Hollywood. What we didn't know was how lucky we were to have neighbours so excellent in the front house: Ellie and her parent's Jen and Amy.  It only took us 3 years to finally hangout and not just in the front yard.

Amy, Jen, and Ellie not only became part of our family, but also collectors as well. So when Jen decided to take the plunge and open
BOOKSHOW we made a plan. I'm as happy as a clam to be in the the inaugural show. Please come if you can.  It is gonna be a shindig of fun! Bring the kids! More details to come!

Until then, take a gander at:
